FROM DESIGN CHAIR'S DESK
Design is a holistic term in the truest sense .We often tend to miss this critical point and reduce it to encompass just a deliberate composition or configuration of an image ,a set of materials or a space towards a planned outcome meeting mostly the aesthetic and the purely functional realms.
It is high time the designer’s fraternity, especially the architectural community goes beyond this strait jacketed vision and include within its vocabulary and definition a larger picture. So the question remains as to what this larger picture is, especially in the discipline of architectural design. The need of the times demand our refocusing to engage in the public square as a responsible community defining and laying the ground rules upon the undeniable aspect that architecture can be the very breath of society sustaining it in all aspects.
It is about life. If we pause and think about that, the sheer forcefulness of the engagement of this art and science reveals dimensions hitherto mostly ignored for various reasons or lost in the process of succumbing to market trends. This discipline has impacted history, it has fashioned lifestyles and cultures, it has created images, impressions and nostalgia. It demands our reasonableness towards the client in response to his economic frameworks and limits, it demands our responsiveness to the end user in terms of his aspirations and his message in life .It also demands our responsibility towards the environment that sustains us. We are wonderfully placed as practitioners of architecture .We have a role to play that is wide enough to engage the various dimensions and strata’s of society and sharp enough to address the focused needs and aspirations in the heart of an individual .No other discipline has this bandwidth . The institutions which impart architectural education have a great responsibility when considered in these terms and need to elevate its pedagogy and philosophy to such exalted standards.
The team at KMEA is geared towards that and is equipping and committing on a daily basis its entire team while in pursuit of this larger and loftier goal.
