Biography

Jayadevi Venugopal is a professor and member of the academic board at KMEA College of Architecture. Her background includes experience in Architecture, product design and Architectural research. Before joining KCoA, she worked at Kochi, Chennai and Delhi as an Architect and a product designer. She has also worked as an Architect in Australia. Her research and teaching interest began in Australia where she acquired her Doctorate degree from Queensland University of Technology. Her research interest is in developing a holistic and regional approach in Architectural design and practice based on human ecological relationships. Apart from her research interest, she is currently developing her own product line with a focus on children’s furniture.

She heads the research team at KCoA and has introduced a research based pedagogy to the students which is emerging as a successful model with our graduate students publishing their papers in indexed journals. She has also acted as the coordinator for the research team that recently got accepted for the The Urban Studio Research Project (USRP) launched by The Council of Architecture. She also has her own practice, Studio Design Shasthra, where She specializes in creating experience based living environments and focuses on cost effectiveness and resilience of the projects. 

Teaching

Jayadevi started her teaching career at QUT, Brisbane as a tutor to the research by masters students. She joined KMEA College of Architecture in 2017 and has been coordinating the dissertation program since then. She also teaches subjects such as product design, research methodology and Kerala architecture. 

Experience

Jayadevi is currently working on developing a research based architectural and design practice. As part of her private practice, she focuses on assembly and residential typologies. Her experience in Architecture includes working with prominent architects of Kochi. As a product designer she has worked in furniture industry. She owns a design patent from Australia and is currently working on her own line of products for children.

Received Grant in aid June 2012 towards travel to India for data collection and presenting paper at the international conference for advances in Architecture and Civil engineering, Bangalore : 70% of travel expense ($1000) from Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane.

Accepted as a group member for an academic trip to China in 2011 by Dr Gillian Lawson. Represented beginner PhD students for presentation at Tongji University and Hubei University.
