Ar. Ramesh J. Tharakan

Professor

Completed his Bachelor of Architecture Degree Course form the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi in 1973 graduating with a first class.

On his return to Cochin, Kerala; he set up the Architectural firm Design Combine in 1975 and pioneered a movement in modernism in the vernacular architecture of Kerala.

The firm has won many accolades in tropical resort architecture, housing and institutional buildings. 

He is the founder member of INTACH, Cochin which promoted the movement of rehabilitating Heritage bungalow structures of Fort Cochin into Boutique Hotels  catering to the foreign tourists.  This proved to be a turning point in the rejuvenation of the Heritage area of Fort Cochin.

The firm has also been a training ground for young architects who have gone on to set up successful professional practices emulating the style and substance of ecologically sound architecture.

He has been teaching at KMEA for the last 5 years mentoring the students of Semester 5 & 6 in the Architectural Design Studio.

Lead Architect for Eco Resort for Mfar Group, Kumily: 

This is a five Star Eco resort where the initiative is to make it as eco-friendly as possible.  The structures are mainly made using bamboo and thatch, retaining the maximum ground area without much of intervention, creating water bodies to act as natural rain water catchment, planning the landscaping around the existing vegetation of spices, maintaining the spice garden and making it into a self-sustaining portion of the resort etc. 

Principal Architect for Spice Village, Thekkady.

 This is the first of its kind of resorts in India, heralding the eco-tourism sector. 

Principal Architect for Malabar House Residency, Fort Kochi. 

One of the first conservation/adaptive re-use transformation projects to be completed in Fort Kochi. 

Lead Architect for Le-Colonial Hotel, Fort Kochi. 

Lead Architect for Tower House Hotel, Fort Kochi. 

Architect for Engineering Colleges at Vadakara, Kidangoor and Perumon for Co-operative Academy of Professional Education.
